Estelle Getty Dies:

A small group of us have long since believed that Estelle was the youngest cast member in the Golden Girls, just made up to look old. She passed away aged 84 this Tuesday morning, which means the other cast members must be positively ancient.

We’ll miss you Estelle.

South Africa has plenty of stock both of the Wii console and the Wii Fit - probably because of the price of both. The console is about R3200 while the Wii Fit is R999. Console gaming is just not a reasonable price around here.

A typical Wii game is around R500 (similar for XBox and PS3) while the average PC game is around R300. Just for some exchange rates: 100 South African rands = 12.7236 U.S. dollars —> about $80 for the Wii Fit. This may seem cheap, but the value of the Rand is such that it tends to be more than a healthy part of most people’s monthly salaries.

It’s not that we have a lot of stock, it is just that people can either not afford it or they don’t want to buy it after seeing the Wii adverts on tv.

Pre-Order the iPhone 3G in South Africa:

I’m not convinced this will be my next phone. I’ve played with a new Nokia Symbian phone (6120 Classic) and I was very impressed. I will have to spend some quality time with the iPhone before I buy into the hype. For my next phone I’m keeping an eye on the iPhone 3G, Nokia E71, and the HTC Touch Diamond.

While all three have similar features they all have pros and cons.

The pro’s: the iPhone has fantastic usability and is an amazing iPod; the E71 is a true computing platform with a full qwerty keyboard; the Diamond is innovative, small, and is as much a computing platform as the Nokia.

The con’s: the iPhone seems to be highly controlled (meaning in part: you can’t just install some application you downloaded from some website - I could be wrong and that is why I need to play around with one) and will use a lot of data over the air in order to make some of the nice features work really well (such as GPS and Google Maps); the E71 has a dinky screen and is styled in that not so awesome Nokia standard; the Diamond runs Windows Mobile 6.1.

Thank goodness I have 6 months to decide. I hope that they don’t bring out any new phones to make the choice harder.

I got a nice tax refund and I treat such money as I would chocolate – it dissappears fast. Besides buying a Nintendo Wii I also bought Super Mario Galaxy as well as The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess. And another wireless controller and nunchuk so that Jess and I can box against each other.

The Wii is proving to be loads of fun so far. I am hoping to take the whole setup with a projector to a family braai this Monday.
